The good news is it’s compatible with the old USB 2.0, but it will only work at USB 2.0 speeds in this case. You need USB 3.0 at both ends plus an USB 3.0 cable, because it does have more pins than the older version.

There are three plugs available: Standard A, which is exactly like the old one, Standard B ( square-form ), and mini B. Even if the specs are out officially, it doesn’t mean we’ll see the new USB 3.0 in stores very soon, or at least not yet than final 2009 or first months of 2010.

Intel Nehalem will be unveiled at an event in San Francisco on November 17th and it will become “the fastest processor on the planet.” The Core i7 was announced a while ago and we can’t wait to get our hands on this architecture, however, the pricing might be a problem.

The Core i7 will be manufactured in three different quad-core models : 2.66 GHz Core i7 920 available for the under $1000 PC class, the 2.93 GHz Core i7 940 which will be available for $1500-$2000 PC class and the 3.2 GHz 965 Extreme Edition for the fastidious PCs which most of us will never afford.

The 920 costs 284$, the 940 will be $562 and for the Extreme Edition you will have to pay $999. Anyhow you should expect the retail prices to be 10-15 percent higher.
Yesterday, at the Intel Developers Forum conference, Intel released some more information about the chips, but we will present you only the important stuff.

It seems like the Core i7 chips will be based on the new QuickPath Interconnect and this technique that combines the chips, processors and memory controllers all together, will increased the memory read-write speeds by three times than any other previous microarchitectures.

Intel Core i7 will include a so-called turbo mode that “shifts the processor into a higher gear” without overheating. The Intel Nehalem architecture for servers will be available as of 2009 and after that, Intel will begin to sell desktop chips (”Havendale” and “Lynnfield”) and mobile chips (”Auburndale” and “Clarksfield”).

The Siggraph industry conference starts on August 11 and it will take place in Los Angeles. It is said that Intel will give us technical details about their new microprocessor family called Larrabee. These new chips will compete against NVIDIA and ATI on the computer graphics market, but those will also perform a lot of other computing tasks.

Specialists say that the Larrabee will have between 16 and 48 cores compatible with the standard x86 instruction set, and at first looks it seems like all these cores could not compete against next-gen NVIDIA and ATI microprocessors that will feature 256 and 800 cores respectively.

The key for Intel’s Larrabee stands in their “right-hand turn” strategy and in the chip architecture that they prepared as they learned something from the 432 or the Itanium designs - “This is on the level of the 432 or the Itanium”, said Larrabee’s chief architect Doug Carmean.

We will have to wait until next week to find out more about Larrabee which is expected to be released in late 2009 or early 2010.

Well, this story should make us really happy, but there are some important drawbacks which makes us ignore the importance of the latest hard-drive unveiled by Seagate. It’s the Barracuda 7200.11 with 1.5TB of storage on a single drive which makes Seagate very proud as this is the “the single largest capacity hard drive jump in the more than half-century history of hard drives – a half-terabyte increase from the previous highest capacity of 1TB, thanks to the capacity-boosting power of perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology”.

Why I don’t like it for the moment? Because it will be out in August and there is no word on pricing therefore we can expect this HDD to cost way too much. Also, we can expect a big company to buy the first series of hard-drives for their servers and probably we will get our 1.5TB Barracuda 7200.11 as of next year.

Seagate also released information about two drives - Momentus 2.5-inch 500GB for notebooks which “are the fourth generation of Seagate’s laptop family to use PMR”. These drives will be released in 5400 and 7200RPMs and they will be available in Q4 this year.

Samsung started the mass production of the 1.8-inch and 2.5-inch MLC-based solid state drives. The SSDs will be available in two versions: a 64GB and a 128GB. The Samsung SSD has a write speed of 70MB/s and a read speed of 90MB/s while its power consumption is approximately 0.2-watts in standby mode and 0.5-watts in active mode.

Samsung says that its new 128GB SSD will last about 20 times longer than the generally accepted 4-5 year life span of a notebook PC hard drive. It is also expected that this SSDs will also be cheap. Now all we can do is to wait until we can test them.

The company claimed that the Extreme CPU will run at 6.4GT/s, while the others at 4.8GT/s, due to it’s latest QuickPath Interconnect ( QPI ) bus.

The CPUs will be compatible with LGA1366 sockets and will feature 8MB of L3 cache, supporting all Intel’s technologies, except the Trusted eXecution Technology ( TXT ). We should see them in stores as of Q4, this year, for an undisclosed price yet.

The ReallyCool Keyboard combines what are supposed to be two of the most appreciated aspects of a keyboard: is very silent, and waterproof, so you can relax if you spill whatever you’re drinking on it. Besides, you can type under water, if you’re one of the guys that can’t stay away from their PCs even when they’re at the pool.

It has no ‘moving parts, being completely wrapped in a silicone outer shell, and you can even put it in a washing machine if you’re too lazy to clean it once in a while. The keyboard is said to be manufactured for use in the medical environment, and it could be pretty handy in courts too.
