Light-Bending Metamaterial

If there is somebody who would like to be invisible then their dream can become true thanks to the researchers from the University of California Berkeley. The material that could make us invisible was demonstrated on very thin two-dimensional objects and the researchers managed to do it for the first time on three-dimensional objects.

Objects are visible because they reflect a part of the light and in order to cloak objects, there are needed artificially engineered materials that will deflect the light around the objects. These materials are called metamaterials. Metamaterials are not something new, you probably heard of ceramic and Teflon among others.

The research was led by Xiang Zhang and soon this metamaterial could be used in military and many other applications. Hopefully (or not), the scientists will complete their research and we will see (actually we won’t see) the first invisible object.
