Metaverse Not Dead Yet: Awaiting Apple's VR Headset | DeviceDaily.com

In February 2022, Meta released a Super Bowl ad that featured a toy dog being set aside and then revived in a VR environment.

More than a year later, the conversation has largely shifted from VR to generative AI as ChatGPT, a Microsoft technology, and Bard, from Google, have emerged as a new paradigm for search.

But is VR dead? Apparently not. On Thursday, Peacock announced that it was available on Meta Quest 2, a headset that starts at $400 and on Quest Pro, which starts at $1,000.

Meanwhile, Sony, the largest player in VR, has reportedly cut its 2023 production plan for the PS VR2 by about 20%. Sales of Meta Quest Pro are around 300,000 units.

Right now, the industry is awaiting Apple’s VR headset release. The device, which Bloomberg says will be called “Reality Pro,” will cost about $3,000, though an alternative could be priced at $1,500, according to Bloomberg.

Not everyone is as optimistic as Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg was about the future of VR. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo wrote recently that Apple’s announcement event is “likely the last hope for convincing investors that the AR/MR headset market could have a chance to be the next star product in consumer electronics.”

In other words, we’ll soon know if Meta’s 2022 Super Bowl ad was a wise prediction or an overoptimistic fever dream.

Launch is “likely the last hope for convincing investors the AR/MR headset market could… be the next star product in consumer electronics,” per analyst.
