Adulting: Millennials Need Soft Skills In The Workplace [Infographic]

— January 6, 2017

One of the biggest problems in recruitment these days is finding candidates who are able to contribute to the workplace in a meaningful way. Millennials are one of the most highly educated generations in history, but they are lacking in the soft skills they need to make it in today’s highly competitive workplace. Having a college degree doesn’t mean you know how to get to work on time or set personal goals. Yet many Millennial job candidates think their personal development ends when they graduate from college, and it is causing a serious headache for recruiters and for HR departments across the country.

Adulting is a popular thing to brag about on social media, but things like folding laundry or microwaving a television dinner are not really the kinds of things one should be bragging about. Real adulting includes learning how to manage your time, learning how to set and meet goals, and prioritizing your work tasks in order to be the most productive employee you can be. It’s also important to learn how to avoid distractions like social media and to take regular breaks to keep yourself focused. Adulting outside of the office can also affect job performance- getting enough sleep, eating a healthful diet, and getting regular exercise help you to be energetic and focused. Yet these are all things that aren’t being taught in colleges, leaving most Millennials struggling to figure it all out at once.

Employers are looking for job candidates who can bring something new to the table, but the lack of focus and soft skills is keeping many Millennials out of the workplace. Business leaders all agree that communication skills and problem solving skills are more important than any college major. Over 95% of business leaders would prioritize hiring a candidate who can contribute to innovation, and the same percentage of business leaders is interested in a candidate with a high level of ethics and intercultural skills.

Millennials still have a lot to do after college graduation, and it’s time we let them in on this fact. Learn more about the adulting skills employers are looking for from this infographic!
