Amazon may open its first East Coast bookstore in NYC
Given how Amazon has done its best to put the brick-and-mortar bookstore out of business, it’s still odd to see the company building retail locations of its own. But CEO Jeff Bezos said the company would keep doing it after opening a store in Seattle and announcing plans for one in San Diego, and now we’re hearing rumors about the location for the next store. The New York Post says that Amazon will soon be going toe-to-toe with the many wonderful booksellers that can be found around NYC.
Specifically, the Post claims it’ll open a retail store and cafe in the massive Hudson Yards retail and residential development. But assuming this does come to pass (the Post says the deals aren’t signed yet, though a source said there’s “no way that deal is dying”), it’ll be a while before the location actually opens. The projected opening date is late 2018 or early 2019. By then, it’s entirely possible that Amazon will have sold us enough Kindles that we have no need for physical bookstores at all. But Amazon will also sell the company’s physical products like the aforementioned Kindle e-reader, Kindle Fire tablets and perhaps even the Amazon Echo.
