AMD Vega GPU Could Launch In May, Probably At Computex?

Just earlier today we were discussing how AMD Vega’s architecture and High Bandwidth Cache can help deliver twice as much usable graphics memory compared to GPUs powered by older architectures. So, just in case you were left wondering when Vega cards will hit the store shelves so you can squeeze out every ounce of performance from your favorite titles, we have some idea.

Don’t get too excited, though! It’s not confirmed yet as we are sure AMD will rather wait some more before divulging anything concrete regarding the Vega launch date. However, the folks over at WCCFtech have been told by a source that the general availability of high-end Vega GPUs will begin in May 2017.

The launch of Vega-based Radeon graphics cards is expected to take place roughly a year after the release of NVIDIA’s Pascal based GeForce 10 series graphics card. If you remember, the first of the GeForce 10 series cards, the GTX 1080, was launched on May 27, 2016. With that in mind, it is possible that the Vega launch could happen at a special AMD event — especially considering that the chip giant is reportedly planning to launch Ryzen processors at this year’s GDC.

Some speculations also suggest that it will probably take place at Computex, scheduled to kick off on May 30.

These next-generation GPUs are optimized to handle an array of applications including gaming, productivity work, as well as server-related tasks. AMD has detailed Vega on multiple occasions including last week at the CES 2017.

Vega will make its debut in several SKUs for gamers and enthusiasts. It is virtually confirmed that AMD has at least a couple of chips up their sleeve — the Vega 10 meant for the high-end sect of the market, as well as the Vega 11 GPU that will be covering the low-end sect and most likely will launch around the same time.
