Apple iAd’s App Network Shutting Down
Another sign that Apple is taking iAd in a new direction.
If you like information, you’ll be hard pressed to find a more unsatisfying source of it than Apple’s developer blog news updates.
The company announced it is shutting down the iAd App Network at the end of June in a four-sentence post last Friday.
New App Store apps can no longer join the network. Existing members can continue to promote their own apps across the network with campaigns setup in iAd Workbench and take in whatever revenue they generate from serving ads in their own apps until June 30, 2016.
What form iAd takes after June 30 remains to be seen, but Apple’s direct sales efforts and experiment with programmatic appear to be ending. After striking up a partnership with big programmatic providers last year, Buzzfeed reported last week that iAd will stop accepting programmatic demand, transition its ad sales force and focus solely on facilitatng direct publisher sales with a self-serve platform that would also end the 30-percent revenue share Apple has taken.
