Apple references four new iPhone models in MagSafe FCC filing
Apple revives MagSafe with new wireless chargers and cases for iPhone
New MagSafe accessories will snap onto the back of the phone.
Apple has long retired its MagSafe power ports, but it’s bringing back the name for a line of wireless chargers and cases. The new wireless chargers are able to deliver up to 15W of power, and use magnets to ensure your device is correctly positioned. At launch there’ll be two options, the standard MagSafe Charger and the MagSafe Duo Charger, which, as the name suggests, can charge two devices: the iPhone and Apple Watch.
The MagSafe brand will also be applied to a new set of accessories, which include a magnetic wallet that snaps to the back of the iPhone. There’s a new leather cover that switches the phone into a clock mode. There will also be a line of MagSafe cases in silicone, leather and clear plastic. Apple has said that we can also expect MagSafe accessories from third-party manufacturers.
According to Apple, MagSafe accessories and chargers feature an array of magnets around the wireless charging coil which is “optimized for alignment and efficiency” that aligns with the iPhone perfectly. The MagSafe chargers also accommodate existing Qi-enabled devices, not just iPhones.
Apple has listed some of the products in its store with a “coming soon” badge. The standard MagSafe charger will cost $39, while cases appear to be priced at $49 no matter what flavor of iPhone you buy. The clip-on wallet will retail for $59. No word on pricing for the Duo charger yet.
