Award-Winning Writers Lend Their Expertise to Ghost Recon Wildlands
In the Bolivia of Ghost Recon Wildlands, the Santa Blanca cartel has all but taken over the country, turning it into a narco-state and exercising immense control across every facet of society. To create this sweeping vision of a cartel writ large, Ubisoft has partnered with bestselling authors Don Winslow (The Cartel, The Power of the Dog, Savages) and Shane Salerno (The Cartel screenplay, Savages screenplay, Armageddon).
The two not only have extensive experience researching and writing about cartels; they have also worked together for many years. Winslow notes, “I’ve written about drug cartels for more than twenty years and together with my writing partner Shane Salerno have brought that knowledge to the story, scenes, characters and dialogue found in Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands.”
Winslow and Salerno collaborated with the writers at Ubisoft Paris to create the narrative of Wildlands. They drew on their experience to create a realistic vision of a powerful cartel and to keep the storyline grounded as they developed the “what-if” scenario of the game. Nouredine Abboud, senior producer at Ubisoft, praised the collaboration: “As fans of their work, we knew that Don Winslow and Shane Salerno would be the perfect team to help us keep the game rooted in reality while keeping the game’s core entertainment experience.”
“I’ve been a Tom Clancy fan ever since I first read The Hunt For Red October,” Salerno said. “It was a real thrill to work on this game with the team at Ubisoft, who are incredibly passionate and committed to delivering the best gaming experience possible for fans.”
Ghost Recon Wildlands launches on March 7 on PC, Xbox One, and PS4, but fans don’t have to wait that long to get a closer look at the Santa Blanca cartel. On February 16, the live-action promotional video War Within the Cartel will premiere on Ubisoft’s Twitch channel.
