When I first heard about weighted blankets, I have to admit I was somewhat skeptical. After all, the thought of a 15- or 20-pound blanket on top of me sounded suffocating, hot, and uncomfortable.

Then, a colleague told me that they got a weighted blanket, and it’s helped them overcome insomnia. That got my attention as I’ve struggled with sleep in the last few years. Compared to taking medication or suffering from insomnia, I thought it couldn’t hurt to try one of these weighted blankets. Here is my review of the Baloo weighted blanket.

What is a Weighted Blanket?

Before buying a weighted blanket, I wanted to learn more about where they came from and why they were developed. It turns out that weighted blankets have been around for a long time. They were first used in the 1970s to help children with anxiety, autism, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Once the weighted blankets proved helpful for children, their use spread to the rest of the mental health community throughout the 1990s, helping adults with similar issues. Since then, others found a more significant benefit related to greater relaxation and sleep due to the comfort the blankets offered.

The blankets appear to work based on the pressure they create that emulates the sensation of a hug. It is this sense of touch that then provides the necessary calming effect that balances emotions, reduces anxiety, and helps prepare the body for sleep.

Baloo Weighted Blanket Options

Baloo weighted blankets use lead-free glass microbeads to create the weight. These microbes are spread throughout the blanket in small pockets. Baloo uses 100 percent cotton for its eco-friendly weighted blankets, which is intended to provide a cooler and far more comfortable feel to accompany the weight. All materials are free of chemicals so you know it’s safe for you and the environment.

Baloo offers a number of sizes and weights. There is a twin throw size that is 12 pounds. The full/queen size comes in 15 or 20 pounds. Then, a king-size is 25 pounds.

The color options for twin and full/queen duvet covers include blush pink, oatmeal, navy, dove grey, white, and charcoal. The king duvet cover color options are white, oatmeal, and dove grey.

The Pros and Cons of a Baloo Weighted Blanket

There is a lot to like about the Baloo weighted blanket. One of the most important things for me is not feeling hot at night when I’m trying to sleep. Despite being a weighted blanket, the material is cool and breathable. That means I’ve never felt uncomfortable even during a warmer month.

Another advantage to the Baloo weighted blanket is that it doesn’t bunch up nor does the filling shift to one side. Everything stays in place, which makes it easier to enjoy and doesn’t make the bed look unmade.

The weighted blankets are also easy to clean. They are machine washable on the gentle cycle and can go in the dryer on a low heat setting. While you might think this weighted blanket will take forever to dry on a low cycle, but it dried on one cycle thanks again to the breathable cotton material.

The only downfall I could find is that I have to buy a cover for it to have some color on my bed. And, it helps to get the Baloo cover to ensure it stays cool and comfortable. I tried using another duvet cover, but it felt warm because there was no more breathability. If you want something besides the white of the blanket, then add that cost into your purchase.

Pricing and Purchase Locations

The twin size is $ 149 while the full/queen size is $ 169, and the king size is $ 194. You can also purchase a linen duvet cover for your weighted blanket ($ 99 for twin, $ 129 for full/queen, and $ 179 for king). The price seemed fair, especially when compared to duvets that you can buy that often cost twice the amount and don’t provide sleep assistance.

When you buy direct from the Baloo website, they also give you a free gift that includes a link where you can download three soothing tracks that total twenty minutes of music.

You can also choose to buy the Baloo weighted blanket from other retailers, including Amazon and Macy’s.

Overall Thoughts

Baloo changed my perception of weighted blankets and what they can do to help improve my sleep. You might even say the Baloo solution has become a security blanket as I sleep better underneath its luxurious feel and cooling effect. I’d recommend that anyone who wants to enjoy more restful sleep try this fairly affordable alternative to a duvet.
