Being able to get reliable Wi-Fi coverage throughout a home or office complex has become a priority for many who need reliable Internet access for working, streaming, downloading. When you have a group of people in your office space, all competing for bandwidth, things can get desperate.

Mesh networks have been gaining popularity as a solution that will extend the WiFi range to ensure more consistent and broader coverage, removing all those dead zones from your home or office space. After exploring what was available, I selected the Eero Mesh WiFi system to test in my home. Here’s what I discovered:

About Eero WiFi

There are two Ethernet ports on each Eero, which makes it easy to hardwire all your devices. The system also comes with an app, which helps you keep an eye on your network, share your network, pause the Internet, and monitor device usage. This helps with parental controls and enables ease of use should I decide to let guests use the WiFi when they are visiting.

Eero Secure and Eero Secure+ are paid subscription services that work in the app and add further features. These features many security tools that conduct t threat scans, issue content warnings, and take care of ad-blocking. Eero Secure+ adds access to security apps that include Encrypt.me, 1Password, and Malwarebytes.

How Mesh Networks Help Connectivity

Mesh networking technology is a flexible solution for extending your WiFi range throughout your home or office. The mesh WiFI system includes nodes, which are small devices that are placed at different locations throughout your home or office. The primary node is attached to the modem you use.

To connect to the Internet, the nodes work together and send data to the node that is closest to the device you are using. You can create your own massive WiFi network with these nodes that offer multiple access points.

What I Like and Don’t Like

The best part about using Eero is that it is fast and reliable — the two most important things you need WiFi to do. Plus, as my needs change, I can upgrade to their Pro mesh system that offers even more powerful bandwidth and greater speed.

I also like that there is free shipping and a 30-day money-back guarantee. They offer responsive tech support, which helped me feel more comfortable about setting up the mesh network. However, even better was the fact that the set-up surprisingly only took minutes thanks to having their app, which guided me through the installation process.

There isn’t much to dislike about Eero WiFi. Some say sites that say other mesh systems are faster, but I haven’t seen it. Nothing beats the reliability and ease of use that Eero offers. I did also find out that Amazon now owns the company, which overall is not an issue. News reports of privacy concerns with network devices and virtual assistants do come to mind as a potential negative since they offer packages that include Echo Dot or Alexa with a three-pack of Eero.

Coverage

I was able to cover my home by purchasing the three-pack solution. It was able to cover up to 5,000 square feet, which is ample as my home is in the 3,000-square foot range. My colleague has an 8,000-square foot home, and he noted that two three-packs had provided exceptional WiFi coverage.

If you are considering the single unit, Eero states that one node covers a home of approximately 1,500 square feet.

What’s in the Box?

You’ll get the mesh nodes and instructions on how to set-up and access the mobile app.

Pricing

The three-pack costs $ 249, which provides savings from buying the individual units that cost $ 99 each. That’s a savings of $ 48 by purchasing the three-pack.

Where to Buy

Eero WiFi products are available on Amazon. It’s also available from retailers like Best Buy and Home Depot.

Overall Thoughts

While it may seem pricey at first, the reality is that it offers exceptional value for the work-from-home freelancer or telecommuter to reliably work, participate in conference calls, and handle file downloads. While the rest of the house streams movies and plays video games without interruption. From the ease of set-up and reliability to the convenience of the mobile app, I would recommend this mesh WiFi system to anyone that has dead spots in their home or office and needs better connectivity.
