Media visibility comes in many different shapes and forms but often people just think about in terms of being featured on television or radio.

That can put you off if you are shy or consider yourself as an introvert. Recently I had two conversations that really brought that home to me:

  • In one a small business owner wanted more media profile for their business but didn’t feel comfortable with the thought of being interviewed by a journalists for television or radio
  • In the other an entrepreneur said that they felt that getting media attention would put them in the spotlight and that made them feel anxious

I don’t think these feelings are uncommon. In fact, one of the reasons why they really struck a note with me was because I feel the same. I don’t like labels and once you start talking about being an introvert everyone has their opinions about what that means. And, of course, if you don’t want to put yourself in the spotlight then is that about being an introvert or shy? That’s one for debate another day, methinks. There’s so much talk about pushing your boundaries and moving out of your comfort zone. I get that, I really do. But, when it comes to media attention you don’t have to scare yourself witless. You can get great profile by playing to your strengths, and your character. That’s not such a bad idea, don’t you think? Yes, you can go for radio and television if your audience hangs out there but you don’t have to. In fact, there are other ways that give you more opportunity to show off your skills and experience and are more effective. So, how can you do that? One tried and tested method, and the one I use for myself, is to write expert articles, features and guest blogs. They provide me with the opportunity and platform to showcase my knowledge, skills and expertise in a way that I’m comfortable with. And, with websites and blogs that are highly targeted you get to reach many more of your target audience in the place where they are more receptive. So, don’t think of media visibility as all about being in the spotlight 24 hours a day, plastered all over the television and radio. Those are great channels but they’re not the only ones and they might not be the right ones for you and your audiences anyway. Often, more targeted profile will be much more effective. In a nutshell: If you feel nervous about getting media visibility for your business then don’t assume it’s not possible. You can find the right channels to get your message across without making yourself a nervous wreck. Where are you focusing your efforts to get media visibility for your business?
