Get Ready for Facebook’s Dislike Button
September 15, 2015
The live HQ Q & A was held at the Menlo Park, California headquarters of Facebook today, Tuesday, September 15, 2015. The most exciting thing to come from the event was the announcement of the new Dislike Button that will be introduced on the platform.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg officially announced during the Q & A that Facebook will soon be rolling out a button that will allow people to express their dislike with comments and posts.
“People have asked about the ‘dislike’ button for many years… and probably hundreds of people have asked about this. Today is a special day because today is the day that I actually get to say we are working on it, and are very close to shipping a test of it,” Zuckerberg said during the Q&A session.
Even though many have been asking for a dislike button for a while now, Zuckerberg explained that the initial interface did not allow for the button. He did not want Facebook to become a “Reddit-like forum” where people could upvote and downvote posts and comments.
Zuckerberg also explained that the button will not be designed to “express negative thoughts, but will be used in “expressing empathy”. There will be no upvoting or downvoting of posts or comments.
“That isn’t what we’re here to build in the world,” he said. “What they really want is the ability to express empathy. Not every moment is a good moment.”
An exciting new development in Facebook. The ability to now express displeasure with comments. Zuckerberg said the button may launch “soon”, but current0ly it is only in the testing phase.
Based on the abundance of Facebook (and Internet) Trolls it will be interesting to see how the use of this button turns out on the platform.
