How an Infographic Made the UN’s Data Clear and Emotionally Potent
An infographic to persuade presidents and chieftains.
FP2020 is a UN affiliate organization that, in their own words, “supports the rights of women and girls to decide, freely, and for themselves, whether, when, and how many children they want to have.” They focus on developing nations and have the goal of reaching 120 million additional women by 2020. Working directly with leaders including presidents and village chieftains, they help in ways the UN cannot.
Even the UN needs some design help.
You can read all this in their big and beautiful progress report that’s a mix of stunning photographs and dense tables of data. Unfortunately, that data is difficult to decipher and doesn’t match the emotional potency of the images. FP2020 needed someone to transform one of these complex data tables into something graphic and easy to understand. This type of data visualization is exactly in Propoint’s wheelhouse.
FP2020’s Communications Associate Kelly Dudine said, ““I’m not a designer. I’m not always able articulate my ideas about design, but being able to talk directly to the people working on the project really helped.”
From concepting to fine-tuning our data visualization.
With the infographic, FP2020 wanted to convey the message to policy leaders that they are all doing wonderful work but there’s still much more to do. We wrestled with how to best communicate that idea and came up with five different concepts that approached the data from different angles. FP2020 and Propoint put their heads together and picked a radial concept, agreeing it best captured the underlying message and visually echoed the sense of wholeness, unity, and interconnectedness that the organization wants to portray. We worked hard to give the graphic a unique look while maintaining the essence of the FP2020 branding. Most importantly, we wanted to make sure the meaning and the message of the data came through loud and clear.
“Propoint was always willing to make adjustments and changes. Propoint was super helpful making sure that we were satisfied with the end product,” said Dudine.
In the end…
FP2020 was happy with the results. We’re proud to play a small role in helping FP2020 communicate their important message around the world that helps millions of girls and women in need.
