League of Legends vs. Overwatch: Korean Cafe Statistics Show Blizzard’s Rise

Is League of Legends under threat from Blizzard’s competitive team-based first-person shooter, Overwatch? The two games seem different enough for the question to not matter, but it seems that new statistics show that in Korea, Overwatch is fast gaining on League of Legends. According to statistics found by The Daily Dot, League of Legends occupies a share of 29.15 percent in the Korea’s gaming cafes. Overwatch, however, hasn’t even been out for a month, and has already secured a solid 23.79 percent share.

According to one commentator, League of Legends has managed to hold a 30 percent plus ranking since February 2013, and this is the first time it has dropped below that figure. Overwatch is the first serious threat to its supremacy in PC gaming cafes, and this spells interesting news for games’ prospects in eSports as well as non-eSports-based revenue.

There’s little doubt that Overwatch is pretty huge at this stage. Blizzard’s first go at a first-person shooter has earned them a whopping 7 million players within the first week of launch, despite it being sold at full $60 price on consoles, and a minimum price of $40 on PC. Needless to say, the game has developed an enormous fan base within a short amount of time, and indications are that it’s only going to get bigger from here on out.

We’ll have to wait and see how the battle of the titans rages – in Korea, and the rest of the world.
