Mid-Day Amazon Prime Day Results: US Same Store Sales Up 80 Percent YoY
Early indicators suggest Amazon’s Black Friday In July promotion day is trending well above average growth trends — as it should be.
In a one-day consumer holiday for Prime members, Amazon is offering “more deals than Black Friday” across the site. Despite some grumblings from consumers about the deal day, some early same-store sales suggest the day could prove quite successful for Amazon.
E-commerce solution provider ChannelAdvisor tells us that as of 12:00 pm EDT, Amazon Europe same-store sales (SSS) were up around 40 percent compared to a year ago, and US same-store sales are up around 80 percent from July 15, 2014. Amazon SSS have been averaging growth in the range of 25 percent, so these are big jumps so far in what is midday for the US and close to end of day in Europe.
ChannelAdvisor’s Executive Chairman, Scot Wingo, shared some annecdotes to illustrate some of what they are seeing among their customers.
- One customer participating in Prime Day promotions sold several thousand items in a lightning deal within minutes.
- Customers that are not participating in Prime Day but that offer free shipping (either via FBA or free merchant-fulfilled shipping) are seeing a lift compared to those customers that are not offering free shipping. One larger brand is up 7x compared to this time last year without any specific deals.
- Activity on Google — both AdWords text ads and Product Listing Ads — is up today. Wingo says they believe that the heavy promotion and subsequent stock-outs after lightning deals are causing consumers to “Prime Day shop” around the internet to a) make sure they are getting a great deal and b) find the product they want if it’s sold out at Amazon.
Update: Amazon Prime VP, Greg Greeley, issued a statement at 3:25 PM EDT saying Prime Day order rates have outpaced Black Friday.
“Prime Day peak order rates have already surpassed 2014 Black Friday. Prime members have already bought tens of thousands of Fire TV Sticks, 35,000 Lord of the Rings Blu-Ray sets, 28,000 Rubbermaid sets, and 4,000 Echo devices in 15 minutes. The Kate Spade purse was gone in less than a minute. We also sold 1,200 of the $999 TVs in less than 10 minutes. And there are thousands more deals coming.”
More insights will be available later today, and ChannelAdvisor will be sharing full-day results tomorrow.
