Milan Design Week using IoT to guide you to cool
There’s no excuse now to be fashionably late at the Milan Design Week thanks to a new smart city app that uses Internet of Things (IoT) technology.
The New Statesman’s CityMetric site profiled a mobile app that let visitors navigate Europe’s biggest design event Fuorisalone, held in Milan this spring.
The app was born out a partnership between global services provider Comarch and Studiolabo, an agency which ran the Brera Design District project. The app was created to help navigate a festival that draws more than 200,000 people to a series of 138 smaller events, The events encompass such sectors as telecommunications, other technology, automotive, fashion, art, and food.
The Comarch Smart City Platform weaves together a variety of sensors, beacons, interactive maps, location-based services and offers engines. The mesh of data from these sources are woven together to allow visitors to navigate the event’s complex environment and information flow.
While the focus was on the relatively compact Brera District – Milan’s cultural and creative heart – Comarch sees the platform as just the beginning.
“The app is a first step for us,” said Kamila Niekraszewicz, Comarch Italy’s country manager. “It was designed for a small but very important part of Milan, the vibrant Brera District and it is focused on the Milan Design Week.”
“We’re glad it all started in Milan, a cradle of design and technology,” she adds.
Milan just the first event city for new app
All major international events and festivals these days require apps to help attendees navigate and enjoy these increasingly complex happenings. In light of this, Comarch intends to further harness the power of IoT technology to expand to other events in the future.
“We are planning to implement more versatile solutions soon,” Niekraszewicz says. “They are dedicated to whole cities and give users brand new possibilities.”
Comarch says it expects to see the smart city technology expand to other cities in Southern Europe and the United States.
