Moto Z vs. Xiaomi Mi5: Is It Worth Buying Mi5 Compared to Modular Moto Z Smartphone

We all know Xiaomi as the leading brand in the budget smartphone market. The company produces excellent smartphones and sells them to us at very affordable rates that are a fraction of what Apple and Samsung charge. Of course, Xiaomi phones come with great build quality and features and can put expensive phones to shame.

Xiaomi launched its flagship Xiaomi Mi5 a few months back and the phone has received great response from Xiaomi fans. The Mi5 is not a regular device at all, but it looks and behaves like a proper flagship and is a fully premium package only at a more affordable rate. In true sense, it is a flagship killer smartphone.

However, Lenovo has launched its new Moto Z smartphone recently and the new Moto flagship phone packs serious hardware. Of course, it will be priced higher than the Xiaomi Mi5, which is why it is worth knowing whether or not the phone will be worth those extra bucks. So let’s do a quick Xiaomi Mi5 vs. Moto Z specs comparison.

Moto Z vs. Xiaomi Mi5 Specs Comparison

Display and Battery: The Xiaomi Mi5 comes with a 5.15 inches Full HD IPS LCD screen with a pixel density of 428ppi. It is juiced by a 3000mAh battery. On the other hand, the Moto Z offers a 5.5inches 1440 x 2560 pixels display with 535 ppi pixel density, which is of course much, much better than the Mi5. The Moto Z gets a 2600mAh battery, but then its 5.2mm slim and can be fully charged in less than 20 minutes, so no worries.

Processor and Storage: Both the Moto Z and the Xiaomi Mi5 run on Snapdragon 820 processor. The Mi5 offers 3GB RAM and 32/64GB internal storage, and there’s a 4GB RAM version too that comes with 128GB storage. There’s no microSD slot for expansion. The Moto Z gets 4GB RAM with 32/64GB storage that’s expandable up to 256GB via microSD.

Camera and Software: The Moto Z offers a 13 MP rear camera with f/1.8 aperture, OIS, laser autofocus, and dual tone dual LED flash. This setup should result in great low light photos. The phone runs on Marshmallow and gets a 5MP front camera with LED flash.

The Xiaomi Mi5 offers a 16 MP f/2.0 rear camera with PDAF, 4-axis OIS, and dual tone dual LED flash. There’s a 4MP front camera, and the setup is good enough to churn out great pics. The phone runs on Android Marshmallow.

Extras: Both the phones come with fingerprint sensors, NFC, and Type-C USB connectivity. However, Moto Z supports MotoMods modular attachments that help the user increase and enhance the functionality of the device.

Price and Verdict

The Xiaomi Mi5 costs $372, while the Moto Z might get priced at around $500-600 (rumor). Of course, that’s a huge difference, but Moto is providing a modular smartphone that is slimmer and packs more exciting features to play with. So yes, if you have the money, buy the Moto Z, or else the Xiaomi Mi5 will never let you complain if you buy it.
