Should You Follow Logo Design Trends? [Infographic]

— April 8, 2019

Whether you’re starting a new business or rebranding an existing one, think carefully about your logo design. Generally speaking, your logo will be the first thing that comes to mind when someone thinks of your business.

When it comes to designing a logo, there’s a lot to consider, including:

  • How your logo design will reflect your brand’s personality
  • How it will communicate your business’s mission & values
  • The versatility of your logo design
  • Whether you will design your logo yourself, or hire someone to do it

But you also need to decide whether or not you want to follow logo trends in your industry, or whether you want to set yourself apart from your peers.

To identify logo design trends, you will need to do some competitor analysis. You will probably be able to identify some trends pretty quickly. You will also be able to identify who the outliers are.

Trends on Logo Colors

For example, a quick look around at businesses in the financial services industry will yield plenty of examples of blue logo:

Meanwhile, many fast food companies use red in their logos:

Whether or not there is a psychological reason behind color preferences for different industries is up for debate. A lot of people’s preferences likely have to do with fond memories associated with logos of that color (like going to McDonald’s as a child).

So when it comes to the question of picking colors for your logo, you should think carefully about your choice. Do you want to pick a color that’s in-line with industry trends, since people may be more likely to trust a brand that feels familiar (something that may be valuable for an industry like financial services or health care services)? Or do you want to take a more disruptive approach, breaking free from tradition (as retail businesses often try to do).

Logo Design Study

Venngage Infographic Maker and SurveyMonkey recently conducted a logo style study that asked over 1000 adults living in the US what their logo preferences were for 6 different industries:

  • Jewelry retail
  • Education
  • Financial services
  • Law firm
  • News/media
  • Technology

The goal of the study was to see what role (if any) logo designed played into the perceived trustworthiness of brands. Take a look at their results in the infographic below. What’s interesting to note is the words people used to describe the logo designs they found most trustworthy – this can help indicate what people look for in businesses from different industries:
