Consumers are using smart speakers more than mobile phones for voice-assistant activities, according to a new study.

The majority (65%) of consumers use a standalone smart speaker while cooking, compared to 37% using mobile for voice assistance, according to the study, comprising a nationally representative survey of 1,000 U.S. adults conducted by PwC.

Consumers use their smart speaker while multitasking 62%), while watching TV (57%), when in bed (38%) and while working (29%).

Usage of voice technologies also varies by age, according to the survey. Heaviest usage is by those 25 to 49 years old (65%), followed by those 18 to 24 (59%) and those over 50 (57%).

Almost all (93%) consumers are satisfied with their voice assistants. However, voice assistants on smartphones have the lowest consumer satisfaction rate.

Voice assistants help people feel organized (50%), informed (45%), happy (37%), smart (35%), confident (31%) and free (30%), according to the PwC study. Almost all (90%) consumers are familiar with voice-enabled products and devices.
