Snapchat Reaches Milestone, Secures Its Place in the Top 3

Snapchat Reaches Milestone, Secures Its Place in the Top 3Snapchat just secured its spot in the Social Media Top 3, surpassing Twitter and lining up right behind Facebook and Instagram (a Facebook owned platform.)

In just 4 years Snapchat has reached 150 million daily users. Just 6 months ago Snapchat was reporting 110 million users.

It took Facebook 5 years to meet this milestone and currently Twitter only has 136 million daily active users. (Though Twitter does not officially disclose daily active user numbers, they have previously stated that 44% of their 310 million active users monthly use the site daily, which equals 136 million.)

According to Social Media Today, in terms of daily active users, the Social Sites rank as follows:

  1. Facebook – 1.65 million
  2. Instagram – 400 million
  3. Snapchat – 150 million
  4. Twitter – 310 million
  5. LinkedIn – 106 million
  6. Pinterest – 100 million

Currently, Snapchat reports some pretty impressive numbers.

  • +10 billion video views daily (source)
  • 9,000 Snaps shared per second (source)
  • 25-30 minutes average time used per user (source)
  • 60% of Snapchat users contribute content (source)
  • Ireland has the most Snapchat users (source)

The majority of Snapchat users are Millenials, who find the site enticing to use because their Snaps disappear and their parents aren’t using the platform.

While Snapchat has secured its place in the top 5, Twitter and Facebook are working hard to continue to grow.

Twitter has been focusing on making their site simpler to use and refining the platform to “broaden its appeal.” (source)

Facebook has recently begun working on an app to compete directly with Snapchat. The concept is the same as Snapchat, photos will disappear within 24 hours. Facebook has tried this in the past with their apps, Slingshot and Poke, which were both created to compete directly with Snapchat, but did not work. Time will tell if their latest venture aims to keep Snapchat behind their two sites.

However, Facebook and Instagram have a sizable lead over Snapchat, but in the world of Social Media that gap could close quickly.

In the meantime, Snapchat may be the most used Social Network you aren’t using. It may be time to learn more about the site and consider adding it to your Social Marketing strategy, especially if your target demographic includes Millennials.
