The Most Ambitious Mods For Popular Video Games
The Best Mods for Popular Video Games
One of the real joys of playing video games is that, thanks to mods, your entire gaming experience can be altered, improved and expanded upon by the work of dedicated developers and doting fans. While some mods offer little more than a change in footwear, the best mods transform just about every aspect of the game, essentially keeping the basic nature and creating a whole new game in its place. Since there have been plenty of amazing mods over the years, we though it appropriate to take a look at the most ambitious mods for popular games.
Warcraft III – Dota
Yes, there have been many successors and imitations over the years, but we must not forget that Dota started out life as a mod. The inspiration behind League of Legends was essentially a mode for Warcraft III. Today, the game may seem a bit out dated, at least visually, but the core experience is still incredibly strong and is the main reason it created an entire sub-genre of standalone mods.

Project Nevada – Fallout: New VegasProject Nevada is a game mode for Fallout: New Vegas, the action role-playing game that took the world by storm, and is perfect for players who enjoy little bit of Sin City style fun with their gaming. Created by the team that brought us Fallout 3 Wanderers edition, Project Nevada is not a complete overhaul, rather a set of themed modules that make the game a lot more interesting and more challenging. Each module is targeted to a different game audience but at the same time works in conjunction with each other.
Skyrim – Falskaar
Skyrim is one of the most popular role-playing action video games to date. Falskaar is the latest mod for the game, which is essentially a new lands mod that opens up a brand new worldspace to the original world. The good news is that this is not a beta or test version, it is a 100% completed mod where players access Falskaar by a dungeon at first, and then by boat. The mod essentially brings in new quests, new lands, more dungeons and places to explore. What you get is 20+ hours of additional content.
GTA V – California Architecture
Grand Theft Auto is probably one most modified games in circulation. One of the latest mods for GTA V is the arrival of realistic California architecture. By this we mean 95% of all the actual freeway signs in Los Angeles. The Hollywood sign, the AMC theatre, the Beverly Hills sign, Street-side props such as the flag of Los Angeles, trash bins and UPS boxes have all been included. This is just a taste of what the mod offers. So, if you want to explore the real California, this mod should do it some justice.
Call of Duty 4: Galactic Warfare
While this may be one of the older games and mods, it certainly has to make the list based on pure brilliance of concept. What the Galactic Warfare mod does is
transform Call of Duty 4 into a modern warfare game with a Star Wars theme. While there is a bit of shuffling around of the infantry, in most part, the game is a complete transformation with brand new levels, new weapons and sounds to look and feel like a Star Wars game. We have to hand it to the fans here for going above and beyond with this one.
Knights of the Old Republic 2 – Sith Lords Restored
The sequel to the Knights of the Old Republic Star Wars game was generally well received, except that it felt unfinished. Many players felt that part of the game was missing, especially in key areas near the end. With the Sith Lords Restored mod, developers have essentially taken a game and finished it for the fans, including all the parts that were missed out on, or made the game feel disconnected in the first place.
ArmA2 – DayZ
While it was released back in 2012, DayZ was ahead of its time in what a mod could essentially become. Not only did it improve the game as a whole, it created an entirely new gaming experience while giving the original creators a lesson about design. DayZ gives players a first-hand experience in armed combat and zombie survival.
These mods are just a sneak peak into what’s out there, but are ones that an avid gamer would do well to check out.
