It may seem like fun and games once you have passed your driving test, but the learning has only just begun. After driving with an instructor for countless lessons, getting behind the wheel by yourself is more daunting than you initially think. The roads can be a scary place, but be it by buying a tracker or other methods, the process can be made a lot easier. Let’s take a look at three things you can do to make the transition into a first-time driver as stress-free as possible.

Buy A Tracker

Contrary to popular belief, very few teenagers have an issue with putting a tracker on their car. Don’t see it as something that reduces your freedom, but something that enhances it. Having a tracker on your car provides many benefits – one of which being that it will significantly lower your car insurance. Not only will you be saving money, but you will likely be trusted more by your parents if they can see where you’re driving. Although in principle this may seem intrusive, both parent and child alike having peace of mind allows a safer, happier driving experience. Another upside to putting a tracker on your car is that it will act as an anti-theft device. With the use of geofencing and motion sensors, you are guaranteed to be notified immediately if there is any unexpected movement of your car. For new drivers, the opportunity to prove yourself as responsible to your parents is welcomed, and a tracker puts you in great stead to do this.

Use P Plates

You may have just passed your test and be driving alone for the first time, but other drivers on the road will not know this. To them, you could have been driving for decades. The way to let others know that you are a newly qualified driver is to use P Plates. P Plates are small, magnetic plates that have a green P on them to signify that you are a new driver. For safety reasons, a new driver is encouraged to attach P Plates to their car as it will allow fellow drivers to be more patient and understanding with you if you are struggling on the road. There is nothing worse than someone beeping their horn at you when you have just passed. So, ensure to use your P Plates as everybody feels scared when they first get behind the wheel. One thing to be cautious of, however, is the fact that many drivers will overtake you and potentially perform dangerous manoeuvres as they see you as an easy target.

Familiarise Yourself with Your Vehicle

During your lessons, the vast majority of your focus is on things outside of your vehicle – and rightfully so. However, this means that you haven’t been focusing on all the buttons and controls inside of your car. Many of these controls are essential to understand if you want to drive safely. The best way to do this is to turn your engine on, sit in your car and have a tester of the controls. If you are struggling to understand what the buttons mean, your owner’s manual will have everything you need to know in there. If you leave testing the controls until you are on a proper drive, you could be putting yourself and other drivers at risk of a fatal accident. For example, if you do not know how to use your fog lights and end up driving in foggy conditions, you will not be able to see where you are going and other drivers won’t be able to see your vehicle from a distance.
