Upcoming 10.5-inch iPad Pro Could Feature Same Resolution As 12.9-inch Variant, With Pixel Density Of iPad Mini
While 2017 is the year of the iPhone, rumors circling the web talk about how Apple is working on a new iPad Pro. The device should sport a new design, with the main feature being an edge-to-edge display making the device more compact while at the same time keeping the same screen size.
The specific dimensions are unknown at the moment, but a Studio Neat designer Dan Provost may be on the right track regarding the size of the upcoming 10.5-inch iPad Pro. Provost published a post on Medium, in which he explains how big the 10.5-inch iPad Pro could be.
As you may remember, back when Apple unveiled the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, Phil Schiller, marketing chief at Apple, explained that the company picked the size that makes the width of the tablet to match the height of the 9.7-inch iPad. He stated that with that size, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro looked similar as having two 9.7-inch iPads side-by-side.
By using the info available, Provost calculated that the upcoming 10.5-inch iPad Pro would match the height of the iPad Mini screen, making the 10.5-inch Pro model to sport the same resolution as the larger 12.9-inch model while at the same time keeping the same pixel density featured on the iPad Mini.
He explained this by stating that “The math works out perfectly. This new 10.5″ iPad would have the exact same resolution as the 12.9″ iPad Pro (2732 x 2048), but the same pixel density of the iPad mini (326ppi instead of 264ppi). Crunch the numbers, do a little Pythagorean Theorem, and you end up with a screen 10.5″ diagonal (10.47″ to be precise, but none of Apple’s stated screen sizes are exact). In terms of physical dimensions, the width of this 10.5″ screen would be exactly the same as the height of the iPad mini screen.”
This confirms current rumors, which all talk about the upcoming iPad Pro model sporting a screen that should be around 10 inches large (different rumors talk about different sizes, but all place the screen between 10.1 and 10.9 inches). Further, a famous KGI Securities analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, stated that the upcoming device will sport a 10.5-inch screen. Kuo changed his prediction, but he still claims that the screen will sport a size between 10.1 and 10.5 inches.
Mac Otakara, a Japanese site dealing with all things Apple published two reports. In the first one, the site claimed that the upcoming tablet would sport a 10.1-inch screen. The second report mentioned a 10.9 inches screen size.
All reports put the screen size between 10.1 and 10.9 inches, meaning that Provost could be correct. The upcoming iPad Pro is rumored to be a flagship model sold alongside the 12.9-inch model. The rumored design changes include an edgeless display, with thin top bezel, and no Home button.
